Things to Know (Please Read Before Scheduling an Audition)

COVID Protocol

For the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, a COVID vaccination was required to sing with The Colorado Choir. For the 2023-2024 season, per current CDC guidelines, that will no longer be a requirement. Anyone may audition regardless of vaccination status.

Returning Members

With the removal of COVID restrictions, we anticipate that some former members of The Colorado Choir would like to rejoin the choir. Anyone who has not sung with the choir for the past 2 seasons or more will need to reaudition; please fill out the audition form to schedule your time.

The Audition

There is no need to prepare a song for the audition – our Conductor/Artistic Director will have you vocalize with the piano. You will receive a confirmation email when your audition has been scheduled confirming the date and time of your audition.

Rehearsal and Membership

The Colorado Choir rehearses every Sunday evening from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in Denver’s Hilltop neighborhood with occasional sectionals at 6:00 p.m. We also occasionally rehearse in Littleton (no more than once a month).

Our season runs from September through early May – we do not rehearse or perform during the summer. We do not rehearse on Easter and have a 3-4 week break after our Christmas concert, then return the first Sunday after New Year’s Day. We do rehearse the Sundays before and after Thanksgiving and on Super Bowl Sunday unless the Broncos are playing.

Members must be 18 and older (see “About the Choir” for more information).

Tongue piercings are not permitted as they affect speech and sound when singing.

The Choir performs traditional choral literature that is primarily a cappella with occasional piano or orchestral accompaniment (see “Recordings” for more information).

Our rehearsals are concentrated and focused – we accomplish a lot in a short time to produce a professional sound. The performance commitment is approximately six to eight times during the course of the season (see “Performances” for more information), including:

  • A Christmas concert in early December (two performances) with sometimes an afternoon matinee in mid-late November or early December and one possible community event in early December
  • A Winter concert in early March (two performances)
  • A Spring concert in early May (two performances)
  • Occasional special performances

Colorado Choir members pay dues of approximately $22 per month to support the choir. These can be paid annually or bi-annually at a discounted rate, or monthly (if monthly, there is a separate music fee). There are no additional fees throughout the year. Dues support:

  • Music usage fees
  • Our professional conductor and accompanist
  • Rehearsal hall rental
  • Uniforms (other than men’s tuxedo shirts and more casual blue/black attire)

Expectations of Members

As noted above, our rehearsals are concentrated and focused – we accomplish a lot in a short time to produce a professional sound. With that, members of The Colorado Choir should commit to attending every possible rehearsal during our season unless they are ill. We cannot achieve our ensemble sound with ensemble members missing. Please plan any personal travel (and work travel as possible) and activities around Sunday night rehearsals.

Members are also expected to practice music at home between Sunday rehearsals as needed. Extensive rehearsal tracks and notes are provided.

Uniform Requirements

We are a large, more formal ensemble and strive for a uniform look during our performances so our audience can focus on our sound with no distractions. With that, we have concert uniforms consisting of black floor-length dresses for those who identify as women and black tuxedoes with white vests for those who identify as men. More information will be provided on acceptance to the Choir.

All members are expected to have their own:

  • Black floor-length dress slacks
  • Black close-toed dress shoes

Women:

  • Black dress socks or hose
  • Black half-slip (not required but recommended)
  • Royal blue 3/4- to long-sleeved dressy blouse with no adornments

Men:

  • White, wing-tip collar tuxedo shirt
  • Royal blue button-down shirt
  • Black socks (no pattern)

Additionally, during performances, the following is required:

  • Any visible piercings should be small studs. Hoop earrings and nose rings are not permitted.
  • Wedding rings with stones should be turned so the stone faces inward.
  • Hair must be away from the face.
  • No scents (perfume, cologne, aftershave, essential oil) should be worn as many members have allergies. (Please do wear deodorant.)
  • No watches, bracelets, necklaces, or any other jewelry is permitted besides wedding rings and small studs. These catch the light.

The Colorado Choir is an equal opportunity organization and does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, political affiliation, marital status, sexual orientation, educational background, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. These activities include, but are not limited to selection of members, volunteers, and directors, venue selection, and provision of services. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our choir, audience, and volunteers.

Everyone needs the magic of music, and this choir delivers every single time! My husband and I love this group, and... they sing all over Denver: at Augustana in Denver for Christmas, at Bethany for the winter concerts, and in Lakewood for the spring concerts. Tell your friends & family about this wonderful choir, what a gift they are to the Denver music scene!read more

This Christmas I understand the choir will perform songs in French, Latin and Russian and during the Winter and Spring concerts will add a Spanish piece to the repertoire.
