Next weekend’s concerts feature two composers expressing differing views of life. Verdi, nearing the end of his life, began questioning organized religion, his faith and what the afterlife might bring. He put pen to paper and through his Four Sacred Pieces he gave voice to his doubts and fears. Lauridsen, by utilizing the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, explores love and its effect on how we feel, how we perceive life, and the meaning it brings to our lives.
These themes are not only huge, but they play a role in each of our lives in some way or other. Faith and love can both present themselves in many different ways, but how we incorporate them into our daily lives…that’s humanity.
As you listen, I hope that you will experience music that inspires contemplation, allows reflection, and reminds that we are all on this journey called life.
